Sandman® Horizontal Mud Agitators are primarily used to keep the drilling fluid (mud) mixed and uniform, preventing solids from settling and maintaining optimal fluid properties during the oil and gas drilling applications. They are also used in other industrial applications such as mineral processing and wastewater treatment to ensure consistent mixing and prevent sedimentation.
The horizontal mud agitator typically consists of the explosion-proof electric motor, a gearbox, and an impeller mounted on a shaft. The impeller rotates, creating a flow pattern that suspends solids and thoroughly mixes the fluid. The agitator design, including the impeller type and shaft length, is tailored to the specific application and tank height.
• Preventing Solid Particle Settlement
Mud typically contains solid particles such as clay, cuttings, and weighting agents (e.g., barite). Without agitation, these particles will settle due to gravity, causing uneven parameters like mud density and viscosity. Horizontal agitator use shear force and axial thrust generated by rotating blades to keep solid particles uniformly suspended in the liquid phase, avoiding stratification or sedimentation and ensuring consistent mud performance.
• Promoting Material Mixing and Reactions
During mud preparation or treatment, chemical agents (e.g., flocculants, lubricants, bactericides) are often added, or components (e.g., water, weighting agents) are adjusted. The high-speed rotation of the agitator quickly disperses additives into the mud, accelerating dissolution or chemical reactions, ensuring uniform distribution of agents, and enhancing treatment effects (e.g., controlling viscosity, reducing filtration loss).
• Adjusting Mud Fluidity
The shearing effect of the blades on the mud during agitation can adjust its viscosity and rheology. For example, continuous agitation prevents mud from “thickening” during, or shearing breaks down oversized flocculent structures, keeping the mud with appropriate fluidity to meet process requirements such as drilling and transportation.
